HOW TO MAKE GRAVY

Reading Time: 2 minutes
GRAVY MIX, GRAVY

In many places in the UK people get a little twisted about Gravy, we know it belongs on a roast dinner, a pie and chips. But if you want to start a war, try pouring Gravy over your fish & chips.

If we are honest, we don’t mind what you do with our beautiful Gravy.

The Ceres Gravy Mix is a proper gravy for chip shops of today; it is made with plenty of Soy Sauce for richness, Black Pepper, Ground Sage and not to forget about Ground Bay Leaf.

A common question is about how to make the Gravy, we have a base recipe that we recommend, but in this article, we will help you with an alternative method too.

Hob (Recommended)

In our view, making Gravy this way is the best way for volume, but also it is the most efficient way of getting all the best out of the ingredients. Just like the Curry Sauce, the natural starches that thicken the Gravy will expand fully and consistently on the hob.

IngredientsWeight / Volume
Ceres Gravy Mix500g
Water5 Litres

Method:

➡️ Set 4 litres of hot water on the hob, bring to a simmer.

➡️ To 1 litre of cold water add 500g of Gravy Mix and stir well.

➡️ Add mixture to simmering water and stir, cook for 3-4 minutes until gravy has thickened and has a sheen to it.

When doing this method, you can either serve right away in a bain-marie or let it cool and refrigerate it.

When you need it, you can microwave or warm on hob gently until it reaches 70c.

If you have stored in the fridge, you may need to add a little water to loosen it as the natural starches thicken when cooling.

Microwave

If you want to use the microwave, then here is a recipe that should work. We don’t recommend it because the ingredients don’t fare well in the microwave and the natural starches expand at different rates.

IngredientsWeight / Volume
Ceres Gravy Mix500g
Water4.5 Litres

Method:

➡️ To a bowl add 1 litre of cold water, add Gravy Mix and stir well.

➡️ Stir in 3.5 litres of hot water.

➡️ Pop into the microwave for three minutes and stir, repeat this process every three minutes for 12 minutes. If Gravy is not as thick as you would like, give it another three minutes.

These methods will give your customers a great tasting gravy they expect from a chip shop, but even better it’s loaded with lots of great herbs and spices.
